How Much Sunscreen Do You Need? The Real Numbers

For your face and neck: about a quarter teaspoon, the length of two fingers of cream, applied every morning. For your whole body in a swimsuit: about one ounce, a full shot glass. Sunscreen is tested at 2 milligrams per square centimeter of skin, most people apply a quarter to half of that, and under-applying an SPF 50 can quietly turn it into an SPF 15 or less.
How much sunscreen should you apply to your face?
About a quarter teaspoon for the face and neck together, which is roughly the two-finger-lengths rule. Err generous: the tested dose is more than feels natural.
The number behind every SPF label is 2 milligrams of sunscreen per square centimeter of skin: that is the density at which SPF testing is standardized, so the protection printed on the bottle assumes it. Translated out of lab units, an average adult face plus neck needs roughly 1.2 to 1.5 grams of product, which is about a quarter teaspoon, or a line of cream down the length of your index and middle fingers: the "two finger rule" you have seen on every skincare feed. The finger version is a memorable approximation, not a calibrated dose (hands and faces vary), so treat it as a floor, not a ceiling: convention wrapped around real test math.
Professional guidance stays deliberately simpler: apply enough to cover all exposed skin, most adults need about one ounce for a swimsuit body, and rub it in thoroughly [1]. If quarter-teaspoons feel fussy, the honest shortcut is: apply what feels like slightly too much. Almost nobody errs on the generous side.
Why does the amount matter so much?
Because studies of real-world use consistently find people apply 25-50% of the tested dose, and protection falls faster than the shortfall suggests.
Under-application is the sunscreen problem, more than brand choice, filter chemistry or format. Real-world application studies repeatedly find that people apply between a quarter and a half of the 2 mg/cm² testing dose. Protection does not scale down politely: at half the tested dose, an SPF 50 delivers something closer to an SPF 7-15 depending on the formula, because SPF falls roughly exponentially with dose. The label you paid for and the protection you are wearing can be different products.
This is also the honest answer to "does high SPF matter?": partly, yes, as an under-application buffer. An SPF 50 applied thinly still tends to outperform an SPF 15 applied thinly. How much sunscreen for each body part?
The teaspoon rule covers it: roughly a quarter teaspoon per zone for face and neck, half a teaspoon to a teaspoon for larger zones, one ounce for everything.

The zone translations are convention built on the same 2 mg/cm² arithmetic; bodies vary and none of this needs to be precise to the gram. The failure mode worth engineering against is not imprecision, it is the systematic 50-75% shortfall that real-use studies document.
How often should you reapply?
Every two hours outdoors, immediately after swimming, toweling or heavy sweating. An indoor office day is honestly more forgiving.
The two-hour rule is standing dermatology guidance for outdoor exposure [1], and it exists because film integrity degrades: sweat, touch, towels and clothing wipe the product off unevenly. Water exposure ends even "water-resistant" protection on the label's own terms (water resistance is rated in 40 or 80 minute increments, then you reapply).
The honest nuance the two-hour rule flattens: photostable modern filters do not simply expire at 120 minutes sitting on an undisturbed face indoors. If your day is a desk, a morning application is defensible and reapplication is a bonus; if your day involves sun, the two-hour clock is the rule to keep. Does makeup or moisturizer with SPF count?
Only if you wear it at sunscreen dose, which almost nobody does. Treat SPF makeup as a bonus layer, not the protection.
An SPF 30 foundation is tested at the same 2 mg/cm² as a dedicated sunscreen. To collect that SPF 30 you would need to wear roughly a quarter teaspoon of foundation on your face, which is several times a normal makeup application and not a look anyone is going for. The same math applies to SPF moisturizers applied in thin cosmetic amounts.
The workable system is boring: a dedicated sunscreen at proper dose as your final skincare step, then makeup in whatever amount you actually want on top, counting its SPF as incidental. A few minutes between the two layers helps the sunscreen film set before you work over it: convention, but the mechanistic logic (not disturbing the film you just built) is sound. Powder or spray SPF products are reasonable for midday top-ups over makeup, with the same caveat that a light dusting is a top-up, not a fresh dose.
What did regulators find about sunscreen absorption?
FDA studies found some chemical filters absorb into blood above the agency threshold that triggers further testing. The FDA explicitly did not conclude they are unsafe, and still recommends sunscreen use.
Because this question follows the dose question everywhere: in 2019 and 2020, FDA researchers applied sunscreen at maximal-use conditions and found that several common organic ("chemical") filters reached plasma concentrations above the threshold at which the agency asks for additional safety data [3]. That is a real finding worth stating precisely: absorption above a testing threshold was demonstrated; harm was not. The study authors and the FDA both said plainly that the results do not mean people should stop using sunscreen [3][4].
If the absorption data bothers you anyway, the practical response is not less sunscreen; it is mineral filters. Does sunscreen expire?

Can I mix sunscreen with moisturizer or foundation to save a step?
