Skincare Myths: What the Evidence Actually Says

Pores do not open and close, "chemical-free" is a marketing phrase, and toothpaste on a spot does more harm than good. This page takes the most repeated skincare claims and grades each one against the dermatology literature, using the same evidence tags every future forum post here will carry.

Do pores open and close, and can you shrink them?

No. Pores have no muscles, so nothing opens, closes, or permanently shrinks them. Their apparent size can be reduced; their actual structure stays.

The claims: steam "opens" pores, cold water "closes" them, and the right product shrinks them for good.

The verdict: false on the physiology. A pore is the opening of a hair follicle and its attached oil gland; it is not ringed by muscle and cannot dilate or contract on command. What determines visible pore size, per the dermatologic literature, is sebum output, loss of elasticity around the pore, and follicle volume [1][2]. Heat and steam soften the debris inside a pore, which is useful before extractions and is where the myth comes from.

What to do instead: you can reduce how visible pores are (retinoids and oil control both help by addressing the actual causes [1]), but "permanently smaller" is not on the menu, and any product promising it has told you something about itself. Managing expectations is half of evidence-based skincare.

Is "chemical-free" skincare a real thing?

No. Water is a chemical. Every ingredient in every product, natural or synthetic, is a chemical, so "chemical-free" is a marketing phrase, not a formulation fact.

The claim: good products are "chemical-free" or "free from chemicals."

The verdict: meaningless as stated. Everything with mass is made of chemicals: water, squalane, rose extract, vitamin E. The phrase works as marketing because "chemical" has come to connote "synthetic and scary," but the distinction it implies does not exist in chemistry. A plant-derived compound and its lab-synthesized copy are the same molecule.

What to do instead: ignore front-of-bottle vocabulary entirely and read ingredient lists. The useful questions are: what is the active, at what concentration, in what formulation, with what evidence? Those questions have answers; "is it chemical-free?" does not. When the forum opens, "chemical-free" in a product recommendation will get the same treatment this page gives it.

Is natural skincare safer than synthetic?

Not reliably. This one earns a mixed evidence tag: natural ingredients can be gentle, but the documented allergy record of essential oils shows "natural" is no safety guarantee.

The claim: natural or plant-based products are inherently gentler and safer than synthetic ones.

The verdict: mixed evidence, leaning against. Safety tracks the specific molecule and its concentration, not its origin. The clearest counterexample is well documented: nearly 80 essential oils have caused contact allergy, with tea tree, ylang-ylang, clove and others producing patch-test reaction rates above 2 percent in tested patients, and sensitization is easier on damaged skin and with high-concentration products [3]. Fragrance components, natural or not, are among the most common cosmetic allergens. Meanwhile plenty of "synthetic" ingredients (glycerin, petrolatum) have decades-long safety records.

What to do instead: judge ingredients individually. If you have reactive skin, an unscented synthetic-heavy formula is often the safer bet than a botanical blend. Patch test new products on the inner forearm for a few days before committing your face.

Does drinking more water clear your skin?

The evidence is thin. Extra water may slightly improve hydration measures in people who drink very little, but no good evidence links water intake to clearer skin or fewer breakouts.

The claim: eight glasses a day flushes toxins and clears acne.

The verdict: mixed evidence at best, and the honest reading is weaker than the internet believes. One small study found that adding 2 liters of daily water for 30 days measurably improved skin hydration readings, mainly in people whose baseline intake was low [4]. But a systematic review of the question concluded the overall evidence base is limited and inconsistent [5], and neither source shows anything about acne, "toxins," or clearance. Hydrated skin is not the same thing as clear skin.

What to do instead: drink water for all the normal reasons; expect nothing dramatic from your face. If breakouts are the problem, topical treatments with actual evidence (and a dermatologist for persistent acne) are where the leverage is.

Are expensive products better?

Price predicts packaging and marketing spend, not results. Formulation quality and active concentrations are what matter, and drugstore chemistry is often identical.

The claim: a $200 cream must outperform a $15 one.

The verdict: unsupported as a rule. Call it what it is: the belief that price signals efficacy is convention, and an expensive one. The actives with the strongest evidence in cosmetic dermatology (retinoids, sunscreen filters, standard moisturizer ingredients) are old, off-patent, and cheap to formulate. A luxury price can buy nicer texture, scent, and packaging, which are real pleasures, but no published body of evidence shows price tracks clinical performance. Some of the best-evidenced products in existence (generic sunscreen, plain moisturizer, adapalene gel) sit on drugstore shelves.

What to do instead: pick products by ingredient list and evidence, spend extra only for textures you will actually use daily, and remember that consistency with a cheap routine beats abandonment of an expensive one. Our routine order guide covers the three-product core that does most of the work.

Is my skin purging or just breaking out?

Purging is a plausible, commonly reported adjustment phase when starting retinoids or exfoliating acids. Irritation from these actives is well documented; purging itself is weakly studied.

The claim: new breakouts after starting a product mean it is "purging" your skin and you should push through.

The verdict: partly grounded, often abused. What is solidly documented is that retinoids cause an early irritation phase (redness, peeling, dryness) that typically settles as skin adapts [6], and that retinoids accelerate skin cell turnover, which is the proposed mechanism for existing clogs surfacing faster. The "purge" as a distinct, predictable phenomenon is more clinical lore than measured science: mixed evidence. The usable rule of thumb: purging should happen only with turnover-accelerating actives (retinoids, AHAs/BHAs), only where you usually break out, and should resolve within roughly 6 to 8 weeks.

What to do instead: new breakouts from a moisturizer, sunscreen or makeup are not a purge; that product is a suspect and can be stopped. With a retinoid, ease in (2 to 3 nights weekly), moisturize well, and if things are still worsening past two months, stop and reassess, ideally with a dermatologist.

Does toothpaste dry out a pimple overnight?

Skip it. Toothpaste is formulated for teeth, and its detergents, flavorants and alkalinity can chemically irritate facial skin, sometimes leaving a mark that outlasts the pimple.

The claim: a dab of toothpaste overnight shrinks a spot by morning.

The verdict: a harm-tinged myth. Older toothpaste formulas contained triclosan, which had antibacterial activity and gave the trick a kernel of plausibility; modern formulas do not. What remains is menthol, sodium lauryl sulfate, essential-oil flavorants (see the sensitization record above [3]) and an alkaline base, applied to inflamed skin. The common outcome is irritant contact dermatitis on top of the original blemish, and irritated inflamed skin is more prone to lingering post-inflammatory marks, especially in deeper skin tones.

What to do instead: actual spot options exist at similar cost: benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid spot treatments, or a hydrocolloid patch, which mostly works by stopping you from picking. All are formulated for skin. Toothpaste is not, and "it stings so it must be working" is not a mechanism.

Frequently asked questions

Do pore strips shrink pores?

No. They pull out the visible top of debris inside some pores, which can look satisfying, but the pore structure is unchanged and refills over days. They do nothing about the causes of visible pore size: oil output and elasticity.

Is "non-comedogenic" a regulated claim?

No. There is no standardized regulatory test behind the label; manufacturers apply it based on their own criteria. It is a reasonable starting filter if you are breakout-prone, not a guarantee.

Does makeup age your skin or need "skin rest" days?

There is no good evidence that skin needs makeup-free days to "breathe"; skin does not respire through pores. The real risks are going to bed without cleansing and irritation from specific ingredients. Remove it properly and daily wear is fine.

Do dark spots from picking go away on their own?

Post-inflammatory marks usually fade over weeks to months, faster with daily sunscreen since UV darkens them. Picking and aggressive scrubbing extend the timeline. Marks that are raised, growing, or changing are a dermatologist matter, not a wait-it-out one.

Is sunscreen only needed on sunny days?

UVA passes through cloud and window glass and drives much of long-term photoaging. The trials showing sunscreen benefits studied daily use, not sunny-day use. Daily application is the pattern the evidence actually supports.

Can a product "detox" your skin?

No. Detoxification is what livers and kidneys do; skin does not store toxins that a cream or mask can pull out. "Detox" on a skincare label is marketing language with no measurable claim behind it.

Does shaving or trimming make facial hair grow back thicker?

No. Cutting hair at the surface does not change the follicle. Regrowth feels stubbly because the cut end is blunt, which reads as coarser. Hormones determine thickness; razors do not.

Are DIY lemon or baking soda treatments safe?

Not recommended. Lemon juice is acidic, phototoxic in sunlight, and a sensitization risk; baking soda is alkaline enough to disrupt the skin barrier. Both are far harsher than formulated products at similar cost. Formulation is the safety feature DIY skips.
